India will unfurl a new naval flag that retires a British colonial emblem, according to the office of PM Narendra Modi.

At the commissioning of the Vikrant, which his office hailed as "a significant step" for military independence, PM Modi will make the new design public on Friday in Kerala.

According to a statement from his office on Tuesday, "doing away with the colonial past and fitting the rich Indian maritime heritage, PM will also unveil a new naval ensign during the event."
